Born on July 29, 1982, he was the second child of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s five children. His mother was Mariam Aziz, the king’s second wife, whom he married between 1982 and 2003.

The Chinese news agency “Xinhua” stressed that the cause of his death “was not announced at this time.” This was reported by the Paris Match.

But various other outlets report that he died after a long illness.

A Brunei source also confirmed the news, saying that Azim had been in the hospital for a while and that his death was announced by radio this morning.

Prince Haji ‘Abdul’ Azim was buried in the royal tomb in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, where several Brunei sultans and members of the royal family rested.

He said that the people and residents of Brunei Darussalam “must lower the national flag to half-staff starting today and begin a seven-day period of mourning.”

The source added that the country is in seven days of mourning and everyone must wear white. Instructions sent to residents, according to local reports, read: “Muslim women should wear a white hood or headscarf, and non-Muslims should wear 3cm wide white armbands.”
