Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The government boasted of knowing who was behind the massive action against the Job Creation Act (Ciptaker Omnibus Act of the UU). There is an implicit meaning to what the coordinating economy minister, Airlangga Hartarto, said about who the parties are “behind the scenes.”
Airlangga said that there was an organized mobilization carried out by intellectual figures.
You could even say that these intellectual figures funded and sponsored the massive action against the Ciptaker Act.
“So we know who’s driving it, we know who the sponsor is. We know who financed it,” Airlangga said on CNBC Indonesia TV’s Squawk Box on Thursday (8/10/2020).

Agents put out a blazing fire in front of the Mulia Agung Cinema, Senen, (8/10) the night. The riots in Jakarta in the wake of the demonstrations against the Job Creation Act were still out of control with the vandalism of various public facilities, such as the Pospol cinema halter. Chaos was also seen in the area, piles of stones and broken glass were scattered over Jalan Kramat Raya. Previously, the mob also set fire to the Senen police post. The windows of the TransJakarta Pasar Senen bus stop were smashed. The masses also burned several parked trucks. (CNBC Indonesia / Muhammad Sabki) |
According to Airlangga, the person “behind the scenes” who organized and financed the demonstration had a very big ego. In the midst of the pandemic, they are running a demonstration, but the person behind the scenes is not participating in the demonstration.
“So of course we also see that these intellectual figures have quite a large ‘sectoral ego’. Because these figures are not in the field, they are behind the scenes,” he said.
Apart from that, Airlangga also touched on the factions in the decision to ratify the Omnibus Law on Cipta Kerja at the Plenary Meeting of the DPR earlier last week.
As is known, according to a report by the Labor Committee (Panja), out of the 9 factions of the RPD, two factions rejected the bill, namely the Democratic Party and the Prosperous Justice Party.
Seven other factions, namely the PDIP, Golkar, Gerindra, NasDem, PKB, PPP and PAN factions, accepted the job creation bill.
“Actually, the government knows who is behind the demonstration. We know who moved it, we know who the sponsor is. We know who financed it. So, of course, we hope that the 7 factions in the DPR also represent the people,” he said .
The government, Airlangga said, would not hesitate to take firm legal action if the situation of the massive actions taking place in various regions of Indonesia becomes more chaotic.
Also, in the midst of the current Covid-19 pandemic, considering that the demonstrations involve many people, it will be dangerous for the safety of all people in Indonesia.
If the Covid-19 transmission doesn’t stop, Airlangga said, it will take another time to get the economy back.
For this reason, he emphasized that the government would not hesitate to take this case to legal action if the situation became increasingly unfavorable.
“We cannot punish based only on words. Of course, we see the actions taken. If there is legal action [yang dilanggar]”The government is taking firm action, especially through law enforcement officials,” Airlangga said.
Airlangga also believed that the mobilization of demonstrations against the Employment Creation Law had been carefully designed, even before the Employment Creation Law was passed in the RPD.
Protesters who rejected the Employment Creation Law were also accused by the government of not seeing the content of the law. So they demonstrate only because they are mobilized by intellectual figures whose names have been pocketed by the government.
“And this is being mobilized before the law is finalized and the date is set. Therefore, we must see objectively that this is indeed a move by those behind the scenes who really want to get attention,” Airlangga said.
Previously, President of the Department of Communication and Media Confederation of Trade Unions of Indonesia (KSPI) Kahar S. Cahyono laughed in amusement when asked for an answer to the accusation.
He emphasized that the labor action was not financed by third parties because the workers had internal cash under the organization through contributions or regular monthly contributions.
“We at the KSPI don’t have sponsors because all the members have quotas, the workers are not unemployed, they have money,” Kahar told CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (8/10).
