JAKARTA, KOMPAS TV – Former TNI (retired) TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo spoke out on the wave of community demonstrations on Thursday (8/10/2020).

As is known, a series of groups made up of students, workers, students and other elements of society demonstrated against the Omnibus Law of the Employment Creation Law.

Gatot, who is also the Presidium of the Coalition for Action to Save Indonesia (WE), said that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi should not prevent a wave of mass demonstrations.

This is because, Gatot assessed, the demonstrations that took place in various regions of Indonesia, especially around the State Palace, Jakarta, were the result of the attitude of the DPR and the government, which was considered to have neglected the public vote in response to the Draft Law on Job Creation.

Instead of listening to the public, the House of Representatives together with the government accelerated the ratification of the Cipta Kerja bill to make it law on Monday (10/5/2020).

“The actions (demonstrations) that took place were actually the result of the DPR and the president’s decision to neglect because they did not pay attention to the aspirations of workers, campuses and teachers,” Gatot Nurmantyo said in his official statement quoted on Saturday (10/10/2020).
