Macron has sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world by accusing French Muslims of “separatism” and describing Islam as “a religion in crisis throughout the world.”
The problems escalated after Macron said his country would not “leave behind a caricature” of the Prophet Muhammad after the murder of a French teacher who showed the cartoon or cartoon to students in class.
That caused outrage in the Muslim world, where protesters in several Muslim-majority countries, including Turkey, Pakistan and Bangladesh, called for a boycott of French products and demanded the expulsion of the French ambassador. In India, where critics say anti-Muslim sentiment has risen since the far-right Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) came to power in 2014, many have come out in defense of the French leader.
