Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Police officer) general Idham Azis | admitted he wanted to slap the pilot helicopter who flew low to break up student demonstrations in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra), last Saturday (9/26).
However, according to him, this wish was impossible to fulfill because physical sanctions were no longer allowed in the Police at this time. He also said that the helicopter pilot had been questioned by the Sultra Regional Police Professional and Safety Division Team (Propam).
“Only now I can’t play tempeleng-tempeleng, so just check Propam. If I still can, I’ll temper it,” Idham said at the DPR Commission III working meeting with the Chief of Police that took place virtually on Wednesday (30/9).
Idham later said that the actions carried out by the helicopter pilots were not in Polri’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) to disperse the demonstration.
According to him, the act of flying the helicopter low to disperse student demonstrations in Kendari was the pilot’s initiative.
“Simply inventing there was no SOP in the air, Kendari’s. I did it, the pilot invented it,” said the four-star general.
A low-flying helicopter during a demonstration was held in Kendari to commemorate the deaths of Immawan Randi (21) and Yusuf Kardawi (19), last Saturday (9/26).
In response to this incident, the Sulawesi Police Professional and Safety Division Team (Propam) has examined the pilot and crew of the helicopter. The Regional Police also stated that the Chief of the Southeast Sulawesi Regional Police, Inspector General Yan Sulawesi Southeast, had never ordered the pilots to fly low and disperse the masses.
“There was no order from the Regional Police Chief. Currently, Propam is clarifying the problem (Pilot),” Sulawesi Regional Police Head of Public Relations AKBP Ferry Walintukan said via short message on Monday (28 / 9).
