One of the health protocols that must be implemented during the Corona COVID-19 virus pandemic is the use of a mask. There are many types of masks that people can wear, from different masks to cloth masks.
Some time ago, the government urged people not to wear diving masks and polish. The reason is that the two masks are considered less effective in protecting against the Corona COVID-19 virus.
Indonesian National Standards Agency (BSN) deputy for Standards Development Nasrudin Irawan said that there are currently cloth masks on the market consisting of one layer, two layers and three layers. Examples of one-layer fabric masks that are widely circulated are diving or buff masks. However, according to SNI (Indonesian National Standard), the applicable fabric mask consists of a minimum of two layers of fabric.
Therefore, BSN also sets Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 8914: 2020 Textiles: Masks made of cloth, including masks, must have a minimum requirement of two layers of cloth.
“SNI 8914: 2020 stipulates quality requirements for masks made of fabrics and / or knitted fabrics of various types of fibers, which consist of at least two layers of fabric and can be washed multiple times (washable),” he said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday. September 22, 2020, as seen on the official website of SBN.go.id. Wednesday (23/9/2020).
In addition, Nasrudin added, within the scope of the SNI there are exceptions, that is, the rules do not apply to masks made of non-woven (non-woven) fabrics and baby masks. Furthermore, these standards are also not intended to address all issues related to safety, health, and environmental sustainability in their use.
In addition, the choice of material for fabric masks must also be considered, because filtration and breathability vary depending on the type of material. The efficiency of the filtration depends on the density of the fabric, the type of fiber and the belts. Leakage from cloth masks according to the research is between 0.7 percent and 60 percent. The more layers, the higher the filtration efficiency.
In SNI 8914: 2020, cloth masks are divided into three types, namely, cloth masks type A for general use, type B for bacterial filtration use, and type C for particle filtration.
Nasrudin added that the cloth masks were individually packaged by folding them or wrapped in plastic.
Regarding the marking on the package of the cloth mask, at least the brand, the country of manufacture, the type of fiber for each layer, antibacterial, waterproof, the label “wash before use” must be indicated on the packaging, washing instructions and the type of cloth mask.
“Although they can be washed and reused, cloth masks should not be worn for more than four hours, because cloth masks are not as effective as medical masks in filtering out particles, viruses and bacteria,” Nasrudin concluded.
