JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, stated that there is no government plan to reconcile with the leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) Rizieq Shihab.

According to Mahfud, Rizieq’s proposed reconciliation requirements were too high.

“I emphasize that the government does not plan to reconcile with Muhammad Rizieq Shihab (MRS),” Mahfud said via his Twitter account @mohmahfudmd on Saturday (12/12/2020).

Mahfud said that initially the government had the desire to have a dialogue with Rizieq if the FPI leader had returned to Indonesia.

He also admitted that he had invited Rizieq’s legal team to discuss the night before Rizieq’s arrival in the country, on Monday (September 11, 2020).

At that time, it became known that Rizieq would arrive in Indonesia on Tuesday (11/10/2020), after spending more than three years in Saudi Arabia.

One of those he invited was Sugito Atmo. Mahfud conveyed that he wanted to keep in touch with Rizieq to protect the country and the people.

“I invite you to enter into a friendly relationship in a neutral place, to have a dialogue with the MRS to protect the country and the people together for the good of the people and the people,” he said.

However, the government was later surprised by Rizieq’s speech calling on the government to release several convicts and suspected criminals as a condition for reconciliation.

Therefore, Mahfud emphasized that the government would not reconcile with Rizieq.

“On the first day he delivered a strong speech, wanting reconciliation on the condition that the government release convicted terrorists, releasing suspected criminals under certain names. Why, we have not asked for high terms,” Mahfud said.
