The Eternal Flame of Mrapen in Manggarmas Village, Godong Subdistrict, Grobogan Regency, Central Java was apparently completely extinguished this time. Previously, Mrapen Eternal Flame had dimmed but never faded.
“The fire has been completely extinguished this time. In the 1990s or, if I am not mistaken, in 1996, the Eternal Flame of Mrapen had reduced the intensity of the gas discharge, but did not extinguish it,” said the Chief Kendeng Selatan Region Energy and Mineral Resources Department, Sinung Sugeng Arianto when contacted detikcom, Friday (02/10/2020).
Sinung said that in 1996, efforts to restore the eternal flame were carried out by drilling to get gas back. Drilling was carried out at a depth of 20 meters.
“After being pierced, it turned out that the gas came out, the intensity of the flames ignited again. In that year it did not go out, it just happened this time,” Sinung explained.
The eternal flame of Mrapen was reported to be completely extinguished on Friday (9/25). Manggarmas village chief Ahmad Mufid said the fire had died down to complete exhaustion.
“The fire has been out for a week and has not shown any sign of flames,” Mufid said when contacted. detikcom, this afternoon.
Mufid admitted that he had reported the extinction of Mrapen’s eternal flame to the appropriate agency. Officials from the ESDM Service of the Kendeng region have also come to verify the extinction of the Eternal Flame of Mrapen.
FYI, the eternal flame of Mrapen is often the source of the torch for various national and international events. For example, the international sports festival Ganefo on November 1, 1963, with 2,700 athletes from 51 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.
Then the 16th National Sports Week (PON) on August 23, 1996. Every year, the eternal flame of Mrapen is also used for the torch of the Vesak Day ceremony for Buddhists.
The Eternal Fire location of Mrapen has also become a tourist destination, but during the Corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic this tourist attraction was closed.
