Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz agreed to improve bilateral relations and resolve extraordinary disputes through dialogue, the Turkish presidency said yesterday.
Reporting from Reuters, State news agency Saudi SPA reported that King Salman contacted Erdogan to coordinate the efforts that the two countries could carry out at the G20 summit, which will take place on November 21 and 22.
During the discussions that took place during the phone call, the two leaders agreed to improve communication channels and pledged to open up to discuss the diplomatic obstacles facing the two countries.
“President Erdogan and King Salman agreed to keep dialogue channels open to improve bilateral relations and solve problems,” the Turkish presidency said in a statement.
Relations between Riyadh and Ankara have recently heated up. This started in 2018 when Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated at the Saudi Consulate General in Istanbul. So far, Khashoggi’s body has not been found.
Furthermore, traders in Saudi Arabia and Turkey resent speculation that Saudi Arabia is imposing an unofficial boycott of imports from Turkey. Turkey’s main business group urged Saudi Arabia last month to improve trade relations.
