Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A Frenchman who recently arrived from London tested positive for the new variant of the coronavirus (Covid-19). This was revealed by the French Ministry of Health in a statement.
Citing Reuters, on Saturday (12/26/2020), authorities said the first case of the new crown variant was found in the city of Tours. The man in question arrived from London on December 19 and is currently in good condition in independent isolation.
For information, one study calls the newest type of mutated crown in the UK, VUI-202012/01, more contagious. This could lead to higher rates of hospitalization and death in 2021.
With the launch of a study from the Center for Mathematical Modeling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, this variant is 56% more contagious than other types. Bloomberg and Medicalxpress also write this point.
“The researchers, who focus on the southeast and east of England and London, say that it is not yet clear whether the mutated strain is more or less lethal than its predecessor,” the study wrote.
“However, increased transmission is likely to lead to a large increase in incidence, with COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths projected to reach higher levels in 2021 than those seen in 2020.”
Investigators also warned the British government that its November shutdown was not effective. Except elementary schools and colleges are also closed.
“Meanwhile, any relaxation of control measures is likely to trigger a ‘massive viral resurgence,'” the researcher wrote again.
This means that “it may be necessary to accelerate the launch of the vaccine to have a significant impact on reducing the resulting disease burden.”
