jpnn.com, JEDDAH – The guard of the French consulate in Jeddah was stabbed with a sharp weapon, on Thursday (10/29). The perpetrator is known to be a Saudi national and has been secured by the authorities at this time.
The French Embassy in Riyadh said in its official statement that the victim was now in hospital and that his condition was not critical.
“The French embassy strongly condemns the attacks on diplomatic property as unjustifiable,” according to the embassy statement.
The attack came shortly after a man with a knife killed several church members in the city of Nice, France. The mayor of Nice described the attack as terrorism.
Since the last few days, anti-French sentiment has continued to strengthen in Muslim-majority countries. The publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and the speeches of President Emmanuel Macron were the triggers.
On the other hand, anti-Islamic sentiment also strengthened in France after a young Muslim man of Chinese descent beheaded Samuel Paty, a history teacher on the outskirts of Paris.
The perpetrator admitted that he wanted revenge on Paty for showing a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in a class discussion.
Since Paty’s murder, French officials have reaffirmed the right to display the cartoons, and the images have been widely displayed in solidarity with the teacher.
