President Joko Widodo has decided that he will release the COVID-19 vaccine for all Indonesians. Vaccination is said to be one of the effective ways to end a pandemic by establishing herd immunity.
Vaccination against COVID-19 in Indonesia is scheduled for early next year. Currently, the Indonesian government is said to have obtained millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
However, not everyone can get vaccinated against COVID-19. Professor allergist and immunologist Iris Rengganis explained that people with certain conditions should not be vaccinated.
In this group, vaccines can react differently. In some cases, vaccines can also be ineffective.
The following are the criteria for people who should not get vaccinated against COVID-19.
1. Sick people
Professor Iris emphasized that the vaccine is given only to those who are healthy. Sick people should not be vaccinated. If they are sick, participants must first recover before being vaccinated.
“Vaccines are only for healthy people. A mild fever should not be vaccinated,” he said, quoted by CNNIndonesia, on Monday (12/21/2020).
2. Have comorbidities
People with uncontrolled comorbidities such as diabetes or hypertension should not receive vaccinations. Therefore, before vaccination, everyone’s body condition will be checked first.
Those with comorbid illnesses must be in controlled conditions to obtain vaccination approval from the treating physician.
3. Not age appropriate
As recommended by the government, people receiving the COVID-19 vaccine are in the age group of 18 to 59 years. This means that people outside this group, such as the elderly and children, cannot receive vaccines.
“The vaccine that is currently being tested should not be used in children because there have been no studies in children,” said Professor Iris.
4. Has a history of autoimmune disease
In particular, the Executive Board of the Indonesian Immune Allergy Association (PP Peralmuni) does not recommend administering the COVID-19 vaccine to people with autoimmune conditions such as SLE or vasculitis.
“It is not recommended that autoimmune patients vaccinate Covid-19 until clearer research results have been published,” says PP Peralmuni’s recommendation.
