JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially elected Yaqut Cholil Qoumas as Minister of Religion (Menag). He is a politician from the National Awakening Party (PKB) and president of the Ansor Youth Movement, an autonomous body of the UN.
Yaqut replaces Fachrul Razi, the army minister of Religion who assisted Jokowi in the 2019 presidential elections. Fachrul Razi was affected by a cabinet shakeup after serving as Minister of Religion for 1 year and 2 months.
Yaqut Cholil Qoumas himself is often called Gus Yaqut. His name began to appear frequently in national media coverage after he served as president of Ansor GP.
Gus Yaqut is a young figure from Rembang Regency. He is the son of KH Muhammad Cholil Bisri, one of the founders of PKB and a prominent UN leader.

His figure has also been a member of the DPR RI for the 2014-2019 period of PKB. At that time, he joined Senayan to replace Hanif Dhakiri of the Central Java X Electoral District, who chose to be an assistant to President Jokowi as Minister of Human Resources in the Labor Cabinet.
Yaqut Cholil Qoumas’s political career is quite long. Before becoming a board member of PKB, he served as Deputy Regent for Rembang from 2005-2010.
He is also the Vice President of Central Java PKB DPW for 2012-2017. Gus Yaqut also served as a board member at Rembang Regency DPRD.

The total assets reported in its latest State Officials Wealth Report (LHKPN) amounted to Rp 936.39 million.
Still, according to LHKPN, when he was still Rembang’s deputy regent in 2005, his assets amounted to $ 257.3 million. Meanwhile, when he was still a member of the Rembang DPRD in 2003, his declared assets amounted to Rs 291.5 million.
Gus Yaqut has assets consisting of land and buildings worth Rs 47 million, transportation equipment and machines (two cars) Rs 882 million, other mobile assets Rs 1.5 million and cash and cash equivalents of Rs 5, 8 million rupees.
Following his appointment as Minister of Religion, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas has so far not updated his wealth report in the KPK.
