Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Suharso Monoarfa selected by acclamation to be the chairman general of the United Development Party (PPP) at the congress held in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Saturday (12/19).

He previously served as interim director (plt) of the PPP director, filling the vacant position left by Romahurmuziy alias Romi, who was caught in a corruption case.

Suharso was born in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on October 31, 1954. He is an alumnus of the Bandung Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan.

He began his political career as a member of the People’s Representative Council of the PPP faction for the period 2004-2009 representing the Gorontalo electoral district.

After a period in office, Suharso earned the trust of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to serve as Minister of State for Public Housing from 2009 to 2011.

At that time, the public housing sector became a separate ministry, separate from the public works sector.

In 2015 or when Joko Widodo was re-elected as president, Suharso was appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council. He held the position until March 2019.

Suharso’s dismissal as a member of the Wantimpres was none other than to serve as executor of the PPP president, who was left by Muhammad Romahurmuziy. Romi, as Romahurmuziy is known, is known to have been arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission for being involved in a bribery case.

In the same year, Jokowi also appointed Suharso as Minister of National Development Planning / Head of Bappoco. He replaced Bambang Brodjonegoro, who was appointed by Jokowi as Minister of Research and Technology / Head of the National Innovation Research Agency.

PPP is currently one of the parties in the coalition that supports Jokowi. In the previous regime of the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono government, the PPP was also in the coalition carriage.

Now Suharso is number one in PPP, one of the oldest parties in Indonesia. One of the most difficult challenges is restoring the PPP as a superior party.

Compared to the other two older parties, Golkar and PDIP (as the PDI’s successor), PPP’s current vote acquisition lags far behind.

The PDIP has 128 seats in parliament or is in first position, followed by Golkar in second place with 85 seats out of a total of 575 seats. The PPP itself is only 9 fractions with 19 seats in the DPR RI.
