Jakarta –
An assailant armed with a knife launches an attack on a church in the French city of Nice. At least three people died and several more were injured in the incident.
Mayor Christian Estrosi called the incident “terrorism.” He wrote on Twitter that the knife attack took place at the Notre Dame church on Thursday morning (10/29) local time. The police were reported to have detained the attacker.
I can confirm that everything made us think that it was a terrorist attack on the Notre-Dame Basilica, “Estrosi tweeted. The Guardian, Thursday (10/29/2020).
President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly heading to Nice.
This attack occurred when France had just experienced the beheading of Master Samuel Paty earlier this month by a Chechen man. The attacker said he wanted to punish Paty for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to his students in civics lessons.
“France is again a victim of Islamic fascism,” tweeted Estrosi, a former member of parliament for the Republican Party, a far-right party.
It is not immediately clear what the motive for the attack in Nice was, or if it had anything to do with the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad.
