Yasser Louati, a French human rights defender who heads the NGO Committee for Justice and Freedoms for All, said Macron’s latest move was seen as “distracting the public from its own inability to prevent attacks.” “This also reaffirms the idea that there is a link between terrorism and the surveillance of Muslim minorities,” Louati said, quoted on Monday (11/23/2020).
Meanwhile, a bill discussed next week also stated that the French government could dissolve Muslim NGOs if “their actions threaten human dignity” or if they “exert psychological or physical pressure on others.” “The law on the dissolution of organizations in France is already very problematic,” Marco Perolini, an Amnesty International researcher on Western Europe, told the same media.
Previously, France’s largest Muslim charity, BarakaCity, had been shut down by French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, without judicial oversight. Its founder, Idriss Sihamed, recently spoke to TRT World and said the shutdown was for political reasons.
Previously, Macron had generated controversy in early October when he made controversial comments about Islam while defending the reissue of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. This has prompted several Arab and Muslim countries to request a boycott of French products.
