Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Israeli government finally sent more than a billion dollars (14.1 trillion rupees, assuming 14,172 rupees / US $) of the funds withheld to the Palestinian Authority (PA). This happened after the two of them had been negotiating for two weeks.
“The Israeli government transferred all these financial contributions to the accounts of the Palestinian Authority, which amount to three billion and 768 million shekels,” Palestinian civil affairs minister Hussein al-Sheikh said on Twitter on Wednesday (12 / 02/2020). AFP. It refers to fiscal funds, including customs, collected by Israel on behalf of the Palestinian Authority.
This transfer came after it was stopped last May. This is because Palestine has stopped coordinating with Israel in response to Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank.
Israel subsequently postponed its annexation plans in exchange for an agreement to normalize relations with the United Arab Emirates. This was announced last August. However, in November, Palestine re-established coordination with the state of Israel.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said his country was entitled to the funds. The funds are expected to reduce pressure on the Palestinian economy due to the budget crisis.
“(The employees) will get their debt. They have been patient for months and it is just a matter of a little time to clear things up,” Shtayyeh said.
When this revenue is lost, the Palestinian Authority must cut the salaries of civil servants. Although at that time the Palestinian economy began to struggle from the impact of the corona virus pandemic.
The World Bank said last week that Palestine faces three pandemic crises. Namely, Covid-19, a severe economic slowdown and political stalemate with Israel that disrupted tax transfers.
But by the World Bank’s calculations, transfers from Israel, which equal 35% of the Palestinian Authority’s projected tax revenue this year, will not be enough to balance its budget.
Despite transferring these funds, Israel continues to withhold the amount allocated to Palestinian prisoners. They see that payments to those who have carried out attacks against Israelis fuel further violence.
Every month, the Palestinian Authority makes payments to the inmate or his family. They describe payment as a form of well-being.
