The Singapore government firmly rejects the crowd immunity strategy amid the Corona virus pandemic COVID-19. With the increasing number of new cases, Singapore plans to be more aggressive in testing and monitoring cases of Corona infections.

The director of health services at the Singapore Ministry of Health, Kenneth Mak, said the “price” to pay if the collective immunity strategy was applied too high. There will be many people who are sick and even die.

“Although we have taken several steps to prepare for the increase in cases, to improve our capabilities, our health system can easily be overwhelmed with strategies to address herd immunity,” said Kenneth, quoted by the South China Morning Post on Wednesday. (05/13/2020).

Collective immunity is the concept of immunity that a community has against the disease. This immunity can be obtained thanks to the high immunization coverage or if enough people are exposed to the virus.

The Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) once commented that herd immunity is not adequate if applied in Indonesia. PAPDI Secretary General Dr. Dr. Eka Ginanjar, SpPD, KKV said that if collective immunity is imposed, many people cannot be saved.

“Herd immunity can be achieved if part of the population is infected, which is around 70 percent. This means that up to 189 million of Indonesia’s 270 million people will be infected,” said Dr. Eka.

“The problem is that our case fatality rate (CFR) is very high, above 8 percent. This means that our health facilities are not ready and many will be victims,” he continued.
