Sansha, the ‘secret’ city in the LCS covering 1,700 X New York

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – China is increasingly aggressive in its expansion into various islands in the South China Sea (SCS) that are disputed by many countries. Beijing appears to be stepping up to develop new cities on the small group of islands.

A new report from the United States Naval War College claims that China has built an 800,000-square-mile city called Shansa. That makes it 1,700 times the size of New York City.

Most of Sansha City is a marine area, including the Paracel Islands, which are claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan, and the Spratly Islands, many of which are claimed by Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei.

Town Hall, you could say, is on Woody Island, a part of the Paracel Archipelago.

“Once a remote outpost, Woody Island has become a bustling hub of activity,” said the report written by China expert Zachary Haver for the Institute of Maritime Studies of the China War College.

Furthermore, Shansa is also reportedly poised to attract tourists and various companies to open branches in the archipelago.

In a report written in the Maritime Executive, the city of Sansha has overseen the development of China’s remote outposts in the South China Sea.

Working with authorities in Beijing, provincial officials in Hainan, and other stakeholders such as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), city leaders have carried out various infrastructure, transportation, telecommunications, economic development and defense projects on Woody Island and other occupations.

Administratively, this vast city will again be divided into two regions and will host at least 70 grassroots organizations of the Chinese Communist Party. Not only that, Beijing is also preparing courts to enforce Chinese laws in the disputed area and oversee the defense of its maritime claims.

“The island now offers expanded port infrastructure, seawater desalination and wastewater treatment facilities, new public housing, a functioning court system, 5G network coverage, schools, and regular charter flights to and from the mainland.” Write a report on the US Naval War College.

This is also very much in line with the recent Beijing move, in which they also enacted new laws on maritime security guards. The law is said to help the Chinese coastguards better fulfill their duties and obligations.

According to the Naval Fleet Law, they can fire at foreign ships in the territory because this rule allows “all necessary means” to stop or prevent threats from foreign ships.

Along with these expansion plans, China’s naval and air combat fleets are also circling around the SCS. More recently, a report that Taiwan reported on Saturday (2/20/2021) said that China was seen deploying dozens of warplanes in disputed areas in the South China Sea (SCS).

The South China Sea (SCS) is becoming a potential for widespread global conflict. This is because China continues to claim 90% of the oceanic territory that it owns and carries out a massive expansion in the oceans that are also claimed by several countries in Southeast Asia.
