Several residents in parts of South Jakarta and East Jakarta (Jaksel-Jaktim) heard the boom. BMKG recorded the initial monitoring results regarding the sound of this boom.

“Several residents and netizens in South Jakarta and East Jakarta reported that several knocks were heard between 7:00 p.m. WIB and 9:00 p.m. WIB on Sunday, September 20, 2020,” said BMKG Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Daryono , on Sunday (9/20/2020).

Regarding the explosion, BMKG stated several things. First, the boom can occur due to shallow earthquakes. However, the BMKG did not record any seismic activity in Jakarta related to the explosion.

“However, the results of lightning monitoring by BMKG using lightning detection equipment show that there was some lightning activity that occurred around Mount Salak Bogor between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm WIB,” said Daryono.

The BMKG does not want to speculate on the source of the sound of the boom that was heard in South Jakarta and parts of East Jakarta. BMKG again mentioned lightning activity during the time span for the sound of a hit.

“Our baseline is our team monitoring data that shows that there was indeed some lightning activity that occurred during the time residents reported the crash sound,” Daryono said.

“So the sound of the blow tonight did not come from an earthquake, but there is a suspicion that the sound came from lightning,” added Daryono.
