Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Mayor of Surabaya two terms, Tri Rismaharini finally appointed president Joko Widodo (Jokowi) as minister of social affairs (Mensos). Risma replaces Juliari Batubara, who is suspected of corruption in social assistance Covid-19.

The name Risma in the Jokowi ministerial exchange has been circulating since 2014, when Jokowi was still paired with Jusuf Kalla. However, Risma rejected Jokowi’s offer on the pretext of having a promise to continue leading the City of Heroes.

“When I was offered to be a minister, first I was too ngadep to Bu Mega. At that time, I did not want to be a minister, so only mayor of Surabaya, “Risma said at the time.

Risma admitted that the offer to become a minister didn’t just come once. According to him, the president of the PDI-P, Megawati Soekarnoputri, also made an offer.

In addition to being in the vortex of the ministerial candidate market, Risma’s name is also often mentioned as a possible candidate for governor in the 2022 DKI Jakarta Pilkada, even as a presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

However, what is certain is that Risma has now risen to the national political scene. The PDIP cadre for ten years has been the number one person in the city of Surabaya, East Java.

Jakarta State University political observer Ubedilah Badrun believes that Risma has the potential to become an opponent of DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in DKI regional elections if held in 2022.

According to him, this opportunity could be more visible if Risma could work optimally as advanced capital social minister in the next DKI Pilkada.

“It depends on productivity, if productivity is good it will have a great effect, but if it is altered it is not enough to capitalize on social capital,” Ubed said during a conversation with CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (23/12).

Ubed said Risma could take advantage of the development of the digital age to increase his eligibility and image to fight on the national political stage. Risma also had to publicize her activities as a mass social minister.

Other than that, according to Ubed, Risma also had to finish all the Social Affairs “homework” quickly if she wanted to increase her eligibility and fight in the upcoming DKI regional elections.

“There are several important things, apart from its nature for welfare, about how empowering the growing number of poor people, if successful, can be capitalized on as a positive image,” he said.

However, Ubed said, Risma was slow to be drawn onto the national political stage at this point. According to him, Risma should have been brought onto the national political scene some three or five years ago when her popularity and health were in good shape.

“It’s different from three, four or five years ago that it was on the rise again, when in fact it was the right time to attract Risma nationally. Now it is getting worse,” he said.

Build an Islamic base

Likewise, the director of Romeo Strategic Research & Consulting (RSRC), Khoirul Umam, stated that Risma has the opportunity to challenge Anies in the next regional elections of DKI.

However, he recalled that the fight in the DKI Pilkada since 2017 was not only related to the performance of the candidate for governor, but also to the exploitation of identity politics.

“However, it is necessary to calculate the distribution of power in DKI, not based on a rational calculation basis of the government, but there are unhealthy aspects of democracy, that is, related to identity politics,” Khoirul said.

If you want to advance the DKI Pilkada, Khoirul said, Risma must build strength from the ulama and Islamic segments that Risma had never achieved during her tenure as mayor of Surabaya.

According to him, this step could then be built by Risma cooperating with political parties of Islamic ideology.

“But as far as I understand, Risma does not really strengthen itself with elements of the ulama or Islamic segments in its area, it is not that strong there,” he said.

Additionally, Khoirul said that Risma’s performance during her time as social minister will determine the election of Risma, who is also expected to be a presidential candidate in 2024.

According to him, there is an open opportunity for Risma to become a presidential candidate in 2024 if she can improve her performance as a social minister, as Jokowi did when she was governor of DKI Jakarta.

Khoirul said that the Minister of Social Affairs was not the ideal position to handle a big problem at the national level.

“We never thought that a Jakarta governor would be an alternative leadership at the presidential level, but when Jokowi was able to capitalize on the situation at the time, seeking to be different from the existing leadership, it should be taken into account,” he said.
