The West Sumatra Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said experts warned of the potential earthquake magnitude 8.9 from the Megathrust Mentawai fault. Therefore, BPBD is aware of the continuation of this earthquake, namely tsunami up to 10 meters in the city of Padang.

Not only that, disaster risk reduction programs and activities will also be strengthened through the establishment of safe disaster education units, disaster preparedness groups, independent evacuation drills, and the construction of mitigation and evacuation facilities in form of shelters, evacuation route maps and early warning.

“The shelter assistance we build provides a sense of security for the community. Also, since the 2009 earthquake, buildings like hotels have multiplied,” he said.
