US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has yet to acknowledge the end of President Donald Trump’s administration. Pompeo’s attitude infuriated the diplomats.
In fact, Pompeo promised the world a “smooth transition” after the presidential elections on Tuesday (11/10). His side continues to reject President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, saying Donald Trump will remain in power.
“There will be a smooth transition to the second Trump administration,” Pompeo told a news conference, as reported. AFP, Wednesday (11/11/2020).
“The world must be sure that the transitions necessary to ensure that the State Department works today … with the president taking office on January 20 one minute after taking office will be successful,” he said, referring to date of the presidential inauguration.
World leaders who are almost all allies of the United States have congratulated Biden. But Trump has refused to acknowledge the results of the November 3 presidential election and has accused him of massive fraud, calling for a recount and legal action.
When asked if the United States could still issue a statement calling for free elections around the world, Pompeo said the question was “ridiculous.”
“This department cares deeply about ensuring that elections around the world are safe, free and fair, and my officials risk their lives to make sure that happens,” Pompeo said.
