Lionel Messi wants to leave Barcelona by activating a special clause in his contract, which has one year left until June 2021.
The special clause is that Messi can unilaterally terminate his contract with Barcelona at the end of each season, provided he notifies the management in advance.
That means Messi can leave Barcelona with a free transfer at the end of the season until his contract expires in June 2021.

However, this clause is now controversial because Barcelona and Lionel Messi have different opinions about the end of the competition for the 2019-2020 season.
The end of the competition for the 2019-2020 season was extended from June to August 2020 due to the corona virus pandemic.
