The ban will go into effect on Monday, December 28, 2020 until the end of January 2021.
As for Japanese citizens and foreigners living in Japan, they are still allowed to return to the country.
According to government records, as of Friday, five people who had traveled from Britain were confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus.
Since October, Japan has allowed entry to foreigners who stay at least 3 months, on the condition that they must go into quarantine for 14 days.
But the emergence of the new virus prompted the government to remove Britain from the list last Thursday and South Africa on Saturday. Thus, as of this Saturday, the issuance of all long-term visas will be suspended.
The 14-day quarantine request will apply to all Japanese returning from abroad.
Before making this official decision, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga discussed the response to the detection of this new type of virus with officials from the Japanese Ministry of Health.
