JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Nobodym Anwar Makarim emphasized that the school should pay attention to the rights of all citizens to practice their religious beliefs with regard to the rules regarding student uniforms.

This provision is regulated in article 34 of the Regulation of the Ministry of Education and Culture number 45 of 2014 on School Uniforms for Students of Primary and Secondary Education.

This statement was broadcast by Nadiem in response to the alleged obligation of non-Muslim students to wear the hijab at SMK Negeri 2 Padang, West Sumatra.

The Regulation of the Ministry of Education and Culture on school uniforms does not require that specific religious clothing styles be school uniforms.

Also, schools cannot set rules or ask students to wear specific models of religious clothing as school uniforms.

Nobodym said that the rule that forces the hijab on non-Muslims is a form of intolerance of diversity.

“So that not only the legal regulations are violated, but also the values ​​of Pancasila and diversity,” he said.

Nobody also stressed that the government will not tolerate teachers and school principals who commit violations in the form of intolerance.

According to Nadiem, since receiving the report on SMKN 2 Padang, the Ministry of Education and Culture has coordinated with the local government to take firm action immediately.

It also requested that local governments immediately impose strict sanctions for disciplinary violations on all parties proven to be involved in accordance with applicable mechanisms.

“Including the possibility of implementing a work shift so that this problem becomes our learning together in the future,” said Nadiem.

Nobody added, Kemendikbud will continue to strive to prevent intolerant practices in the school setting.
