Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Thousands of protesters, dominated by students, have held demonstrations since Saturday 19 September 2020 in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. They called for the resignation of the military-dominated government under Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and adopted a new constitution.

At a demonstration in the historic Sanam Luang Square, Bangkok, Thailand, protesters declared that Thailand belongs to the people. This was the boldest demonstration in the student-led movement which was estimated to have involved 30,000 mobs.

“Thailand has witnessed almost daily protests in the past two months led by student activists calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha, the former military commander who planned the 2014 coup,” the AFP report wrote, quoted by CNBC Indonesia, Sunday (9/20/2020).

The mass student-led demonstration that began on Saturday It is the largest in a series of protests this year, thousands of people camped overnight near a royal palace, demanding new elections and the reform of the monarchy. The student activists posted a warning sign with the town plaque in Sanam Luang Camp dated September 20, 2020 and declared: “The people have expressed the intention that this country belongs to the people, not the king.”

The move raises questions about the role of the royal family to the public, which was once a taboo subject due to the Thai government’s defamation law.

AFP also noted that the organized student movement largely lacked leaders, partly inspired by pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong calling for the dissolution of the Prayut government.

Especially for the kingdom, the students also called for a major reform. One of the points is the limitation of the power of King Maha Vajiralongkorn over the constitution, royal wealth and the armed forces.

This is because King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who is at the peak of Thai power, is supported by a strong army, he spent a lot of time in Europe. His absence from Thailand has sparked outrage on social media in recent months as the economy has slumped due to the pandemic.
