He composed the song “Teacher’s Hymn, Unsung Heroes” in the 1980s.
A mandatory song that is now always sung in schools, both primary and high school in this country.
Despite the fact that his song was well known and sung by all Indonesian schoolchildren, Sartono’s life was far from luxurious.

Learn self-taught music
Damiyati said that Sartono studied music and musical instruments by himself.
Sartono is a music teacher who teaches himself from various knowledge.
In 1978, Sartono was the only music teacher who could read musical notes in the Madiun area.
“All that he taught by himself, without receiving a higher education in music,” said Damiyati.
Even due to the limitations of his own musical instruments, Damiyati continued, the song “Teacher’s Hymn”, which is currently very famous, he created by whistling while writing the notes and lyrics on paper notes.
Sartono began his career as a music teacher in 1978.
He is a teacher in a private foundation teaching at Saint Bernardus Catholic Secondary School, Madiun City.
Sartono dropped out of the school in 2002.
“During his tenure, his salary was mediocre, not even that much. Bapak had received a salary of only 22,000 rupees a month at that time, and then gradually increased to 60,000 rupees a month. The income was adjusted to his teaching hours,” Damiyati said.

Educational song contest
His love for music has led Sartono to compose several songs.
Coinciding with the push for National Education Day in 1980, Sartono participated in a songwriting contest on education.
Out of hundreds of entries, his song “Teacher’s Hymne, Unsung Heroes”, which he created, became the winner.
In addition to obtaining a certain amount of money as a winner, Sartono along with other exemplary teachers from all over Indonesia were sent to Japan for a comparative study.
Although his work is phenomenal and is sung by almost everyone in this country, it is said that he never received a single royalty for his work.

Call of life
According to Sartono, who was born in Madiun on May 29, 1936, being a teacher in a foundation with mediocre income is a vocation in life that must be faced with patience.
However, through his wife, Sartono had hoped that the government would continue to strive to improve the welfare of teachers in this country.
Such is the figure of Sartono, the composer of the Guru’s Hymn.
Although his destiny is more like a song composed by himself, that is, as a forgotten and unknown hero, he still lives a simple life.
Until the end of his life, Sartono continued to live simply with his wife. This couple still lives happily despite not having children.
