JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Chairman of the Bulan Bintang Party (PBB), Yusril Ihza Mahendra, assesses the efforts of the Nasdem Party to simplify political parties in Indonesia by raising the parliamentary threshold o parliamentary threshold 4 to 7 percent is too small.

According to Yusril, with a threshold of 7 percent, there are still 14 parties that can participate in the election.

“The good thing is that 33 percent, don’t be discouraged. So once a party choice is left for 2 or a maximum of 3 games,” Yusril said when contacted by Kompas.com on Thursday (11/12 / 2020).

“If the 7 percent could theoretically have 14 games, yes, there are still many,” Yusril said.

Yusril said that if Nasdem proposed that the threshold be 33 percent and established by law, then it was certain that if someone objected to this and presented it to the Constitutional Court, they would be rejected.

Because, according to Yusril, the Constitutional Court would argue that parliamentary threshold it is open legal policy which is an agreement between the government and the DPR.

“Until now, the Constitutional Court has always argued that because the PT is not regulated in the 45 Constitution, it has become an ‘open legal policy’ that is the authority of the DPR and the president to decide,” said Yusril .

“So if it is decided that the PT is 33 percent, the Constitutional Court will not be able to cancel it for reasons of democracy or whatever,” he said.

However, Yusril regretted the proposal, because with parliamentary threshold 4 percent today, many parties cannot enter parliament.

“It is not necessary to talk about the small parties again, with only 4 percent of the PT it is already heavy. 7 percent added weight. So maybe 33 percent. After all, it has the same weight,” he said Yusril.

“If the PT is big, it is not just a problem for the small parties. If the PT is 33 percent, the Nasdem Party will become a small party, PDI-P, Golkar, PKS, Gerindra and others will all become in small parties if the PT rises to 33 percent, “he said.

Nasdem Party Chairman Surya Paloh was reported to have said that since its inception, his party has offered efforts to simplify political parties in Indonesia by raising the parliamentary threshold o parliamentary threshold.

Surya Paloh said his party had offered to raise the parliamentary threshold from 4 to 7 percent.

This was conveyed by Surya in a speech virtually celebrating the 9th anniversary of the Nasdem Party, on Wednesday (11/11/2020).

“Right now, the Nasdem Party is offering an increase in the parliamentary threshold from what we have from 4 percent, up to 7 percent,” Surya said.

Surya realized that the proposed increase in TP was not well received and it was thought that he was just playing.

However, he emphasized that the proposed increase in the PT was based on his conscience as president of the Nasdem Party to simplify the life of political parties.

“Even if Nasdem later, will he be able to move on to the PT, he suggested himself? We say whatever the consequences, Nasdem may not approve of the PT, but political life in the country will have to be better than we have today,” said.
