The BPPTKG raised the status of Mount Merapi from alert to alert. Residents are asked to keep an eye out for the increase in volcanic activity on Mount Merapi.

“The current volcanic activity may continue in eruptions that endanger the population. In relation to this, the activity status of Mount Merapi increases from Waspada (level II) to Alert (level III) as of November 5, 2020 at 12.00 WIB “, said the Head of BPPTKG. Yogyakarta Hanik Humaida in his statement, Thursday (11/5/2020).

For information, Mount Merapi has been on alert since May 21, 2018. This status update is scheduled for today at 12.00 WIB. Hanik explained that after the big eruption in 2010, Merapi experienced another magical eruption on August 11, 2018 that lasted until September 2019.

Along with the cessation of magma extrusion, Merapi has re-entered a new phase of magma intrusion marked by an increase in deep volcanic earthquakes (VA) and a series of explosive eruptions through June 21, 2020.

“Volcanic activity continues to increase until now,” Hanik said.

Hanik explained the timing of the volcanic activity monitoring data, that is, first after the explosive eruption of June 21, 2020, internal seismicity, that is, VA, surface volcanic (VB) and multiphase (MP) began. To increase.

By comparison, in May 2020 the VA and VB earthquakes did not occur, and the MP earthquakes occurred 174 times. In July 2020, the earthquake of VA 6 times, VB 33 times and MP 339 times.

There is a shortening of the EDM baseline distance (Electronic distance measurement) Northwest sector Babadan-RB1 (hereinafter abbreviated as EDM Babadan) of 4 cm shortly after the explosive eruption of June 21, 2020.

Subsequently, the shortening of the distance continued at a rate of about 3 mm / day until September 2020. Since October 2020 the seismicity has intensified. On November 4, 2020 the average earthquake VB was 29 times / day, MP 272 times / day, avalanche (RF) 57 times / day, gusts (DG) 64 times / day.

Babadan’s EDM shortening rate reached 11 cm / day. The accumulated energy of the earthquake (VT and MP) in one year is 58 GJ. The condition of the previous monitoring data has exceeded the conditions before the lava dome appeared on April 26, 2006, but is still lower than the conditions before the 2010 eruption.

Even so, according to air tracking there are no new lava domes. Until now, seismicity and deformation continue to increase, BPPTKG also warned that hot clouds could reach 5 kilometers.

“Based on observations of the morphology of the Merapi crater with the aerial photography method (Drone) on November 3, 2020, a new lava dome has not been seen yet,” he explained.
