Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
The number of refugees residing in the surrounding area. Mount Merapi keep growing. At the evacuation point in Balerante Village, Kemalang district, Klaten Regency, Central Java just for example, the number refugees 272 people per Sunday (11/15).
The Coordinator of Refugees in Balerante, Zainu, said there were dozens more people compared to the previous day, which registered 240 refugees.
“The refugees came from four villages, namely Dukuh Kontakrejo, Ngipiksari, Gondang and Sukorejo,” Zainu said at Balerante Village Hall on Sunday (11/15) as quoted by Antara.
Zainu said the four villages are in Disaster Prone Areas (KRB) III or about 5 kilometers (km) from the top of the mountain.
Meanwhile, the temporary evacuation sites, one of which is at Balerante Village Hall, is about 9 km from the top of Mount Merapi.
He also explained that evacuation is prioritized for vulnerable groups, namely young children, the elderly, pregnant women and sick residents. Still, according to Zainu, there were also some residents who were not in the vulnerable group but were displaced because they felt uncomfortable with the increased activity on Mount Merapi.
According to him, about 50 percent of the people who have been displaced live in the four villages. He said that there are still more than 200 residents who have not landed to take care of the livestock.
“They are still comfortable at the top, especially the youngsters. From the 2010 experience [erupsi Gunung Merapi di tahun 2010], now they are more prepared to face. When Merapi has started to endanger life, they will go down immediately, “he said.
Merapi activity is stable
Meanwhile, the Head of the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG), Hanik Humaida, said that although the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi was observed on the border of Central Java Province and Yogyakarta Special Region is high, conditions tend to be stable.
“In fact, seismic avalanches occur often today, but the avalanches are in the form of ancient volcanic material,” Hanik explained after monitoring Mount Merapi from Babadan post in Dukun district, Magelang regency.

He relayed that after the increase in the activity level of Mount Merapi from Waspada to Alert, the condition was still under control.
“This is not like the seismic activity during the Mount Merapi eruption in 2010. In recent days, avalanches have occurred frequently, but the avalanches came from ancient volcanic material,” he explained again.
According to Hanik, currently the lava dome of Mount Merapi is not visible.
He also explained that the magma of Mount Merapi is already on the surface, this can be seen by the deformation or inflation of the stomach of the mountain that reaches 12 centimeters per day.
“The deformation indicates that the body of the mountain is inflated due to the momentum of the magma,” he said.
Hanik appealed to the people of Mount Merapi to always be alert and to obey the government’s instructions.
Meanwhile, according to standard operating procedures (SOP), so far residents are still at the temporary evacuation site. The Evacuation Coordinator in Balerante, Zainu explained, if the activity of Merapi increases and threatens security, residents will be transferred to the final evacuation site.
This step is in accordance with the recommendations of the Center for Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG).
“As for the residents here, the final evacuation site is at Kebondalem Lor, Prambanan. The distance is about 7 km from here,” Zainu explained.
Regarding the evacuation process, the evacuation team has prepared several car units. In addition, some neighbors also have private vehicles, both four and two-wheelers, so evacuation is expected to be faster.
“God willing, we are ready from here, our concept is to self-evacuate first. If we cannot, then we will ask for help from the government or other parties that are ready to help us,” he said.
