Edouard Mendy posted another clean sheet as Chelsea beat West Ham United 3-0. The Senegalese goalkeeper increasingly shows his quality with the Blues.

At Stamford Bridge on Tuesday (12/22/2020) WIB morning, Mendy didn’t have many ups and downs defending Chelsea’s goal. None of The Hammers’ 7 shots hit the target. He is able to coordinate Chelsea’s defense line well.

These results have seen Mendy accumulate 6 clean sheets in 10 Premier League games this season. This number equaled that of Ederson (Manchester City) and only lost to Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa) who already had 7 clean sheets.

The difference is that Mendy’s number of appearances is less than the two, because he only joined Chelsea in late September and only played in week four. Ederson has appeared 13 times, while Martinez has played 12 times.

In addition, Mendy has also scored another 4 clean sheets in the Champions League in 5 appearances. In total, he has logged 10 cleans in 16 appearances. One game to go to the Premier League Cup, where he conceded a goal to Tottenham Hotspur.

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 23: Kepa Arrizabalaga of Chelsea warms up before the Carabao Cup third round match between Chelsea and Barnsley at Stamford Bridge on September 23, 2020 in London, England. Football stadiums across the UK remain empty due to the coronavirus pandemic, as government social distancing laws prohibit fans within venues, causing matches to be played behind closed doors. Mendy’s impressive record so far further explains why Chelsea manager Frank Lampard wants him to be the main goalkeeper, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Looking at the Transfermarkt data, Kepa also posted 10 clean sheets last season with Chelsea. It’s just that he needed 41 games. Plus 4 appearances this season, in which he has always given concessions, so Kepa has gone through 45 games to get the same result as Mendy.

However, there are differences in the quality of Chelsea’s defense between this season and last. Last season, Kepa had the support of defenders such as Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Emerson and Antonio Rudiger. The last three names are now in reserve.

This season, Chelsea brought in Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell. Zouma’s appearance has improved since he moved in with Silva. It’s also worth remembering that in the four games that Kepa has played this season, Silva has never played.

It could be that Kepa’s poor performance was due to the quality of Chelsea’s defense line that was unable to help him perform optimally, although Kepa may not have properly organized the defensive line in front of him.
