Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Raja Malaysia Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin rejected the prime minister’s proposal Muhyiddin Yassin | to announce the state of emergency of the corona virus.

Under the constitution, the King has the power to declare a state of emergency if he is convinced that there is a major threat to Malaysia’s security.

But after a meeting at the royal level, the Palace said on Sunday that the current King did not need to declare a state of emergency in Malaysia.

Muhyiddin Yassin is known to be seeking quick steps following the recent spike in virus cases.

The government argues that a state of emergency is a powerful way to control the spread of Covid-19 amid speculation that they will lose votes that threaten the budget.

Such a statement, which is rarely used in Malaysia, would lead to an automatic shutdown of parliament, and Muhyiddin could push any bill without a vote.

Despite rejecting the prime minister’s request, the king praised the government’s handling of the outbreak and urged lawmakers to stop the political noise because it could destabilize the country.

However, Muhyiddin’s move has sparked a storm of criticism across the political spectrum.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who recently launched an attempt to seize power, has accused him of using undemocratic means to stay in power. He warned that Malaysia could fall into dictatorship and authoritarianism.

Analysts at Singapore Institute of International Affairs Oh Ei Sun said the government saw a sign of “dissatisfaction from extraordinary people” in rejecting Muhyiddin’s request.

According to Worldometer statistics, as of Monday (10/26), Malaysia had 26,565 cases of the corona virus and 229 deaths.
