Lewis Hamilton will begin to lead the way in the Italian Formula 1 GP race. The Mercedes driver took pole position by breaking a record.
In the qualifying session of the Italian GP at the Monza circuit on Saturday (9/5/2020), Hamilton recorded the best time of 1 minute 18.887 seconds. He was 0.069 seconds ahead of his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, who finished second.
Hamilton’s record was the fastest lap record in F1 history. According to the records Gracenote Live, Hamilton’s average speed was 264,362 km / h and broke Kimi Raikkonen’s record (263,587 km / h).
For Hamilton, this is the 94th pole position of his career. The British driver has always been the winner in the last six races in which he took pole.
Behind the duo of Mercedes, is Carlos Sainz (McLaren) in third place. Sergio Pérez (Racing Point) ranks fourth ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull).
Meanwhile, Ferrari suffered an accident in qualifying for the Italian GP. Charles Leclerc only finished 13th in the qualifying session.
Sebastian Vettel was even worse with a start from 17th place. This is the first time since 1984 that Ferrari has been outside of the top 10 in qualifying at Monza.
