Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD commemorating the events of the sixth president of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) he yelled when pressured by people regarding the 2014 Election Law controversy.

Mahfud told that story during a CSIS webinar on the theme of Organizing Pilkada in the midst of a pandemic, on Wednesday (10/14).

Mahfud initially referred to public pressure on Law Number 22 of 2014 on the Election of Governors, Regents and Mayors, which stipulates that regional chiefs are elected by the DPRD. The SBY administration and the DPR at the time agreed that the Pilkada was only conducted by members of the DPRD or, in other words, it did not involve the community in the democratic process.

However, the move by the government and the RPD has sparked protests from civil society.

“At the time, the civil society attacks on the SBY government were extraordinary, (some say) Pak SBY is destroying democracy, all kinds of things,” Mahfud said.

This pressure, Mahfud said, inevitably brought the former TNI officer aboard the plane to tears as he traveled to the United States.

“From the news that Pak SBY could not bear to see the impact, it is said that he cried on the plane on the way, not loud,” said Mahfud.

After receiving much pressure and beatings from civil society to the point of being accused of destroying the democratic order, SBY issued a statement that it would be loyal to the people.

“At that time, I announced that I (SBY) was in favor of the people. We will find a way to prevent the DPRD from holding the Regional Legislative Elections,” Mahfud said.

Soon after, after completing a visit from the United States, SBY issued a Government Regulation in lieu of the law (Perppu).

“On October 2, a Perppu was issued to revoke it,” Mahfud said.

On the Setkab website on October 2, 2014, it was stated that after considering various options, SBY decided to choose Perppu as a concrete way of their struggle together with the Indonesian people to keep Pilkada direct.

The first Perppu that has been signed with respect to the Pilkada is Perppu No. 1 of 2014 regarding the election of governors, regents and mayors. Perppu also repeals Law Number 22 of 2014 on the Election of Governors, Regents and Mayors that regulates the indirect election of regional chiefs by the DPRD.

In addition, as a consequence of the direct stipulation of Pilkada Perppu, to eliminate legal insecurity in the community, President SBY also issued Perppu Number 2 of 2014 on Amendments to Law Number 23 of 2014 on Regional Government that eliminates the duties and DPRD powers to elect Regional Chiefs. .

“” I signed the two Perppus as a concrete form of my struggle together with the Indonesian people to maintain direct regional elections, “SBY said at the time.
