Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Defense Minister (Menhan) Prabowo Subianto signed an agreement allowing the purchase of Japanese-made defense equipment, on Tuesday (3/30/2021). This was signed in Tokyo and witnessed by Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi.

Quoted Kyodo News, together with Foreign Minister (Menlu) Retno Marsudi, this agreement was reached after both held a 2 + 2 meeting (two plus two) with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi. This is the response of Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Yoshihide Suga’s visit to Indonesia some time ago.

Prabowo expressed his openness to Japan to develop joint defense equipment. “I invite Japan to participate in our defense industry and … in the modernization of Indonesia’s defense capabilities,” said Prabowo.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Kishi also stated that this signing opened a solid foundation for the two countries to maintain mutual security. “It is a symbol of our joint efforts to confront regional threats,” Motegi said.

In a joint meeting, the two Foreign Ministers and Defense Ministers of each country discussed many things, including the Myanmar issue. The two countries agreed to condemn the coup carried out by the Burmese military junta.

“With regard to Myanmar, Indonesia and Japan have the same concerns as they see the development of the situation in Myanmar,” Retno said the same day.

“Indonesia strongly rejects the use of force by the security forces that resulted in the deaths of more than 100 victims on March 27, 2021. This is unacceptable.”
