Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – French President Emmanuel Macron spoke again about Muslims in the world. This time he said that he really appreciated Muslims who were shocked by the caricature of the Prophet Muhammad some time ago in France.

However, he stressed that this is not an excuse for Muslims to commit acts of violence in his country. It is due to a knife attack on a church in France this week that killed three people.

“So I understand and respect that people can be surprised by this cartoon, but I will never accept that someone can justify physical violence against this cartoon, and I will always defend the freedom in my country to write, think, draw,” Macron said. According to a transcript of the interview released by his office on Sunday (01/11/2020).

Speaking a day after he suggested that Macron needed mental health treatment due to his attitude towards Islam and Muslims, prompting France to withdraw its ambassador to Ankara, Erdogan took aim at foreign critics. “My role is to calm things down, that’s what I do, but at the same time, protect these rights,” he added.

An attacker is known to shout “Allahu Akbar” (Almighty God), then beheaded a woman and killed two others in a church in Nice, on Thursday (10/29/2020). This attack is the second time that the motive of the perpetrator is Islamists.

Since the incident, Macron has deployed thousands of soldiers to protect the places people visit, such as churches and schools. Additionally, French ministers have warned that other militant Islamist attacks could still occur.

Meanwhile, the anger of the Muslim community rose during the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday last week, where France republished the cartoon of the prophet by satirical outlet Charlie Hebdo and Macron’s ‘insults’ to Islam.

Previously, a teacher was also a victim for showing cartoons of the prophet in his class in Paris.
