LEFT CIRCLE – Recently, the public was excited about the investigation that revealed the possibility of an earthquake occurring accompanied by a tsunami in the south of the island of Java.

This is because the research was conducted by experts from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and also involved the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG).

Research results show that, the potential for earthquakes in the south of the island of Java with a magnitude of 9.1 and can cause tsunami waves to reach a height of up to 20 meters on the south coast of West Java and 12 meters on the southern coast of East Java, while the average height along the southern coast of the island of Java measures 4.5 meters.

Therefore, several prominent figures and BMKG itself called on the public not to be too scared, but to remain vigilant. The potential for an earthquake accompanied by a tsunami can occur due to the simultaneous rupture of segments of the megaathurst pathway in the Indonesian ocean.

“The height of the tsunami can reach 20 meters on the southern coast of West Java and 12 meters in the south of East Java”, said seismology professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Sri Widiyantoro.
