Manchester –
Manchester City finally inaugurated Ruben Dias as a new defender. Previously, Benfica had confirmed it first.
The 23-year-old center-back has signed a six-year contract, which will keep him at Etihad Stadium through the summer of 2026. Ruben Dias is City’s third signing of the season after Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake.
Dias has played more than 100 games in three seasons with Benfica and won the league in 2018/2019. Ruben Dias has also played 19 times for the Portuguese national team.
While at Man City this season, Ruben Dias wore the number 3 jersey. Previously, Ruben Dias wore the number 6 while at Benfica.
“Having the opportunity to join a club like Manchester City is a fantastic opportunity for me and I cannot refuse,” Ruben Dias said on the club’s official website.
“Their success is beyond question. They have been a dominant team in England for the past few years, playing attacking football, which seems to suit my own game,” he said.
This transfer came at the expense of Nicolás Otamendi. The 32-year-old defender was discharged to Benfica after playing for City since 2015.
“They were five extraordinary years, not only in the sense of football. They treat you in the best possible way, from the chef to the uniforms, to the staff who are outside the room,” said Otamendi.
Otamendi won many national titles while in Man City. They are two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, four Premier League Cups and two Community Shields.
