YOGYAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV– La Niña phenomenon, on a weak to moderate scale, is occurring in Indonesia, including the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY).

The head of the Climatology Station (Staklim) of the Yogyakarta Geophysical and Climatological Meteorology and Climatology Agency (BMKG), Reni Kraningtyas, explained the impact of La Nina that will go into DIY along with the rainy season during a hearing with Sleman Regent Sri Purnomo, on Wednesday (10/14/2020).

According to Reni, La Niña, which has an impact on increasing rainfall intensity, automatically has the potential to cause hydrometerological disasters. The potential disasters in question include high winds, floods, and landslides.

“The current rainy season plus the La Niña phenomenon will increase the intensity of the rains by as much as 40 percent,” Reni said.

It also predicts that the beginning of the DIY rainy season will occur in the western and northern parts of the Sleman Regency and in the northern part of the Kulon Progo Regency.

In that area, the rainy season is expected to begin from October II to III. Meanwhile, Gunungkidul area is the last area in Yogyakarta to enter the rainy season, that is, in November I
