Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) addressed the issue of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, in his opening speech at the general debate session of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Wednesday ( 9/23/2020).
On that occasion, Jokowi said that Indonesia will continue to protect the region to remain peaceful, stable and prosperous.
“In our own region, along with other ASEAN countries, Indonesia continues to maintain Southeast Asia as a peaceful, stable and prosperous region,” he said in a virtual speech.
“On its 53rd anniversary, on August 8, 2020, ASEAN reiterated that it must continue to maintain regional peace and stability. This spirit of cooperation and peace is what Indonesia has brought to the broader region, the Indo-Pacific region. , via ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific “.
This statement was made when conditions in the Indo-Pacific, to be precise in the South China Sea region, were heating up due to tensions between the United States (US) and China.
The two countries, which have the world’s largest economies and armies, have frequently been embroiled in disputes over territorial claims in the region.
As is known, China has expanded its claim to the region which is rich in resources and important for the world trade route. There is about 90% of the South China Sea that China has claimed. Meanwhile, the United States continues to challenge those claims and increase patrols in the region for security reasons.
The US move has enraged China. However, the United States is not afraid and refuses to leave the area, which is also being contested by some ASEAN countries.
In addition to the Indo-Pacific issue, in his speech Jokowi also discussed other important issues, including peace and the corona virus (Covid-19) vaccine.
“We know that the impact of this pandemic is tremendous, both in terms of health and socioeconomic. We also understand that this virus does not recognize national borders. No one is safe until everyone is safe,” he said.
“If divisions and rivalries continue, then I fear that the foundations of stability and lasting peace will shake or even disappear. A peaceful, stable and prosperous world is increasingly difficult to realize.”
