Jokowi congratulates Kim Jong Un, what’s up?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) congratulated North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The comments were related to the 72nd anniversary of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which was celebrated on September 9.

“Allow me to convey to His Majesty and the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, my warmest congratulations on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on September 9, 2020,” Jokowi wrote.

“I am confident that the spirit of the founding day will strengthen the efforts of the DPRK government and people to overcome the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” continued the former mayor of Solo.

As reported by North Korean news agency KCNA on Wednesday (9/23/2020), Kim Jong-un received the message from Jokowi directly. In the message, Jokowi also said that he will strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

“On this occasion I also want to reaffirm my commitment to strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and Korea DPR for the common interests of the two countries, as well as for peace and progress in the region and beyond,” he said.

Indonesia and North Korea are known to have established diplomatic relations since the leadership of Indonesia’s first president, Ir. Soekarno. At the time, Sukarno was said to be close friends with the founder and first leader of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, who was the grandfather of Kim Jong-un.

Since the 1960s, Indonesia has had an embassy in Pyongyang, while North Korea has an embassy in Jakarta. Both countries are members of the Non-Aligned Movement.
