Indonesian President Joko Widodo had a telephone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Jokowi conveyed Indonesia’s strong commitment and principles to the Palestinian issue.
“Despite the rapid changes that are taking place in the Middle East, Indonesia will not take any steps to normalize with Israel until a lasting and comprehensive peace is achieved between the Palestinian people and Israelis,” the Palestinian news agency reported. WAFA, Thursday (12/17/2020).
“Indonesia, as the largest Muslim country, will continue to strive to support the achievement of peace and will play a greater role in this matter,” he further said.
Jokowi said he would send Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to meet with his Palestinian counterpart, Riyad Al-Maliki, as part of Indonesia’s efforts to support peace.
Meanwhile, in the discussion, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas relayed the latest developments on the Palestinian issue and the leadership’s efforts to protect the rights of the Palestinian people. He also thanked Indonesia for its position in support of the rights of the Palestinians.
Abbas also expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s position in rejecting normalization with Israel and Indonesia’s commitment to achieve peace based on a two-state solution in accordance with international legal resolutions.
Not only that, Abbas also appreciated Indonesia’s attitude in supporting the Palestinian issue in the international forums of its membership in the UN Security Council.
