As reported in various outlets, a small island in the territorial waters of Buton Island, in southeast Sulawesi, called Pulau Pendek, is viral on social media because it is sold on an online trading site.
The small island is known to be inhabited only by older married couples. They both admitted that they had lived on the island for decades.
A series of island trade has not only occurred this time in Indonesia. In June 2020, residents were alarmed by news of the sale and purchase of Malamber Island in Mamuju, West Sulawesi. The island is priced at Rs 2 billion for residents.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Tito Karnavian, stated that the results of the investigation revealed that Malamber Island still had land status and did not have a certificate of ownership.
The absence of a certificate of ownership has made the island of Malamber considered state property, in this case the West Sulawesi provincial government or the Mamuju regency government.
