Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to New Zealand, Samoa, and the Kingdom of Tonga, Tantowi Yahya, said the procedures in the country to set standards to deal with emergency situations, such as the plague corona virus (Covid-19), not as complicated as in Indonesia.
“The truth is here, to make the laws uncomplicated in other countries, say, Indonesia. The laws can be completed (in a matter of days, even weeks,” Tantowi said in a virtual discussion conducted by the National Agency for Disaster Management on Monday (5/11).
“So when they (the government) sit together, a law is needed to cover a huge activity that involves so much interested part“Even the law can be ended quickly,” said Tantowi.
As a country affected by the coronavirus, Tantowi said New Zealand will soon learn from managing countries that have been affected before, especially Singapore and China.
According to Tantowi, there are at least five keys that make New Zealand’s policy effective in combating the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to making laws.
The first is to make science-based policies and the recommendations of experts and academics.
“They have politics (policy) clear and consistently implemented. Politics This is based on science, the opinions of experts and academics. So with this pattern, it is difficult for us to imagine that there is a policy that fails and is not precisely regulated by regulation, “said Tantowi.
In addition, the laws that have been made are consistently and firmly implemented.
Then the third is to equip the police with clear laws. This is very important because when the area is blocked (confinement), the police must have the courage to take swift and harsh measures against violations committed by the community.
“When there is no (clear) law, of course, there will be a lot of violations,” Tantowi said.
Furthermore, as a country that adopts a parliamentary system, New Zealand has the full support of parliamentarians.
The fourth factor that is no less important is the support of the media. Tantowi explained that 70 percent of New Zealanders only rely on information from verified news sources.
The sources come from newspapers, television and radio. Without leaving a critical force, the media in New Zealand supports the government’s efforts by reporting on the country’s success in fighting the plague and the policies adopted.
“People here play on social networks, but social networks do not become a reference for information, as is the case in many countries. I can say that the distortion of information is very low, because people only obtain information from the mainstream media whose news is certainly verified news. ” Tantowi said.

The final step is public discipline to comply with regulations made by the government.
“All of that support will not be helpful if the community does not fully support government programs. New Zealand’s success is due to all the components of support moving together, synchronizing their thoughts, and taking the same steps to fight Covid-19.” Tantowi said. (ayp)
