Indonesia, Malaysia and several other countries. is currently experiencing a heat wave.

What are the tips to do and avoid?

Pay attention to the following:

1. A doctor friend came up to me and said it was very hot.
During the day, it can reach 40 ° C.

He said:
“At 40 degrees, don’t drink ice water right away! Micro blood vessels can burst. A friend, from the hot sun burst into the house, washed his feet with cold water. His eyes clouded over and he passed out.

2. The temperature in some places has reached 38 ° C or more.
In this condition, keep your body temperature higher.
This danger is not only from drinking ice cold or cold water. This danger can occur even simply by washing your hands, face, or feet.

It takes about 30 minutes for your body to cool down to room temperature.

3. A doctor at the hospital examined a very healthy man. 3 years later, the doctor met the man with a stroke again.
The man also said:

“A while ago, it was very hot. After returning home, to cool down quickly, I immediately took a cold shower. Then, I couldn’t move my jaw properly. I immediately called an ambulance to take me to the hospital …”
Remember, especially on a hot day, avoid cold water as this will cause the blood vessels to contract rapidly.
Those at home with young children should inform the maid and home about this.

Lately the weather is above normal
Although we can feel comfortable when we drink cold … however, it is very dangerous!
Avoid drinking the beverage directly. Drink little by little, slowly

Explanation of BMKG

The Chief of Dissemination of Information on Climate and Air Quality of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Hary Tirto Djatmiko emphasized that it is not true that a heat wave is taking place in Indonesia.

“The news circulating is certainly not accurate, because the current hot and scorching temperature conditions cannot be said to be a heat wave,” Hary told Kompas.com, Saturday (11/14/2020) afternoon.

Hary explained that a heat wave in climatology is defined as a period of unusually warm weather (temperature) that usually lasts at least five consecutive days or more (according to the World Meteorological Agency or WMO) accompanied by high humidity.

Therefore, to be considered a heat wave, a site must record a maximum daily temperature that exceeds a statistical threshold.

“For example, 5 degrees Celsius warmer, than the maximum climatological average temperature, and it has lasted at least five days in a row,” he said again.

If the maximum temperature is within the average range and does not last long, he continued, it is not considered a heat wave.

Highest temperature

Hary added that heat waves generally occur in connection with the development of a climatic pattern of a high atmospheric pressure system in an area persistently over several days.

In this high pressure system, air moves from the upper atmosphere to the surface (sinking) so that it is compressed and the temperature increases.

This center of high atmospheric pressure makes it difficult for air to enter from other areas.

The longer this high-pressure system develops in an area, he added, the more heat will build in the area and the more difficult it will be for clouds to grow in that area.

“Currently, based on BMKG’s monitoring of the maximum temperature in Indonesia, in fact, the highest daytime temperature has risen in recent days,” he said.

Temperatures were recorded to be above 36 degrees Celsius in Bima, Sabu and Sumbawa on November 12, 2020, with the highest temperature recorded at Sultan Muhammad Salahudin Airport, Bima, reaching 37.2 degrees Celsius.

“However, this record temperature is not a large deviation from the maximum average climatic temperature in this region, it is still within its range of variability in November,” Hary said.

Hary explained that the maximum temperature that has risen in recent days could be due to several things, such as

  • In November, the apparent position of the sun’s motion is directly over the island of Java on its way to latitude 23 south after leaving the equator.
The apparent position of the Sun over the island of Java will occur 2 times, namely November and April, so the maximum temperature peaks from Java to NTT occur around these months
  • Sunny weather also causes optimal direct sunlight exposure to the surface, so that the surface temperature warms up.
The sunny weather in Jakarta in the past two days is related to the development of tropical cyclone VAMCO in the South China Sea, which has driven air masses and clouds away from the southern part of Indonesia, so the weather tends to be more brilliant in the last two days.
