The draw in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday (12/14/2020) local time, resulted in the Atletico vs Chelsea match in the Champions League round of 16. Atlético, runners-up in Group A, must challenge Chelsea, who won Group E.
Atlético and Chelsea have met seven times in European competition, six of them in the Champions League. In that competition, The Blue stood out with two wins, three draws and one loss. “This is a difficult draw, because Atlético has experience in the Champions League and in European competitions,” Cech said on the UEFA website.
“They are always a tough opponent. In the league this season, they performed very well and consistently as well, so we expect a tough game.”
“We have played Atlético in the past. Our success against them was not as good as we wanted,” said Cech.
Atlético himself is already well in LaLiga, being in second place in the Spanish League standings. Diego Simeone’s men add 26 points, the same as Real Sociedad that leads the standings with a goal productivity advantage.
As for Chelsea, the ups and downs in the Premier League, where Frank Lampard’s troops are still stuck in fifth place.
In the knockout stages of the Champions League, Atlético will host Chelsea at the Wanda Metropolitano on February 23, 2021, and Chelsea will only take turns hosting the rival at Stamford Bridge on March 17, 2021.
