Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The world is experiencing excitement over the discovery of a new variant of the Covid-19 corona virus in the UK. The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) also revealed the dangers of this new variant.

The chair of the IDI Covid-19 Working Group, Professor Zubairi Djoerban, said that the new variant of the crown called B117 is more contagious than the old one. This new variant spread 71% faster than before.

“However, experts firmly believe that the B117 variant is highly contagious but not more lethal. Not more lethal,” he told a virtual press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/29/2020).

Evidence of very high transmission can be seen in the increase in cases in the UK reaching 90% new variants in 2 weeks. This variant has also been found in Australia, Germany, Italy, Iceland, Singapore, and others.

Even so, this new crown variant can still be detected by PCR testing and it is anticipated that the vaccine will be able to protect itself from this variant. This efficacy will be demonstrated in future studies.

Coordinator of the Expert Team and Government Spokesperson for the Management of Covid-19, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito said that the mutation of this new virus was continuously being investigated and there was no indication that the vaccine was not effective against this.

“The vaccine that is being developed is considered effective in the context of herd immunity, but we must always see new evidence. No one knows when the pandemic will end,” he said.

Wiku added that the virus naturally mutates when transmitted. If you want to prevent the virus from mutating, don’t have the opportunity to transmit from person to person by implementing health protocols such as wearing a mask, diligently washing your hands, and keeping your distance.
