Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was summoned to resign on Monday (10/26/2020).
This happened after the King of Malaysia, Sultan Abdullah, rejected his request to declare an emergency to combat the corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“Thank God, His Majesty the King is not affected by the political game that could drag the country into more critical regions,” said Ahmad Puad Zarkashi, a senior leader of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), the most big of the coalition.
“The welfare of the community is more important. Muhyiddin should resign,” he added.
Opposition lawmaker Wong Chen also made the same point, calling Muhyiddin’s proposal “evil.” He asked the prime minister to resign or remove the minister who proposed the state of emergency.
Earlier, Muhyiddin called for emergency rules amid a further surge in corona case infections in Malaysia and its impact on the economic slowdown. But critics accuse him of using excuses to suspend parliament and prevent the vote from falling.
This is related to the claims of the opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who claimed that the Muhyiddin government had fallen. This is because the support is no longer majority.
The constitution gives the king the right to decide whether to declare a state of emergency on the basis of a threat to security, the economy or public order.
“The state of emergency can provide some form of stability in the short term, especially in terms of policy implementation,” Affin Hwang Capital Asset Management said in a research note for the Malaysian economy.
“Even if it is allowed and prolonged, it is dangerous for the democratic process and state governance.”
