Thousands of people from worker, students and civil society simultaneously held a demonstration against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation (UU Ciptaker) Tuesday (20/6).

They performed in big cities like Bandung, Banten, Tangerang, Bogor, Bekasi, Solo and Surabaya.

The protesters openly rejected the controversial Law that was just approved at the Plenary Meeting of the DPR RI on Monday (5/10).


The Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPI) also previously said that up to two million workers from around 10,000 companies in 25 provinces would carry out a nationwide strike located within their respective companies within the period of October 6-8. 2020.

In Bandung, students held a demonstration to urge the government to repeal the Job Creation Law that had been passed. Centered in front of the West Java Provincial DPRD building, on Tuesday (10/6) from noon to late afternoon, the masses staged a theatrical action until the tires were burned.

Not only students, thousands of workers in Bandung City also carried out a similar action in front of Bandung City Council, Jalan Wastukencana. The president of the Central Executive of the Trade Union Federation of Textile, Clothing and Leather Workers (FSP TSK) SPSI Roy Jinto asked the government to annul the Employment Creation Law.

He, who is also the Presidium of the Gekanas Alliance (National Welfare Movement), urged the city / district government to write to the president to cancel the law through a Government Regulation instead of a law (Perppu).

The two community groups declared that they would continue to carry out actions until the Cipta Kerja Omnibus Law was canceled.

At around 6 p.m. WIB, conditions began to heat up, with security forces firing water from water cannons at least five times at the resisting masses in front of the West Java DPRD building.

Unlike student actions during the day, at night the masses were seen wearing no identities, like alma mater suits. The surviving crowd was dominated by young men dressed in black. In addition to shouting revolutionary slogans, the masses also vandalized the walls of the DPRD building, and also had time to destroy the fence and try to enter.

As of 8:00 pm WIB, the situation in front of the West Java DPRD building in Jalan Diponegoro was gradually becoming more auspicious. In response to the action, Bandung Police Chief Kombes Ulung Sampurna Jaya said that the masses acting anarchically in the demonstration in front of the West Java DPRD building were neither students nor workers.

Ulung assessed that the demo in Bandung had previously been conducted safely and smoothly, it’s just that outside of the action at 18.00 WIB in front of the West Java DPRD building there was chaos.

The police also decided to arrest at least 10 people for the incident of the confrontation. They were then questioned by the Satreskrim ranks of the Bandung Police.

In Serang, Banten, hundreds of workers held a rally against the ratification of the Ciptaker Law in front of the PT Parkland World Indonesia office on Tuesday (10/6). This demo only lasted about 1.5 hours from 07.00 WIB to 08.45 WIB in the morning. The protesters then disbanded in an orderly manner and continued working within the company.

However, it is claimed that the demonstration that closed the Jalan Raya Serang-Jakarta section will continue on Wednesday (7/10) today. Demonstrations were also held in the modern industrial park of Cikande, where various workers gathered in small numbers in front of their respective companies.

In response to the massive action in Serang, at least 400 policemen secured the mass of workers. Several members of Brimob Polda Banten were also deployed.

Not only the workers, the student masses also held a demonstration in front of the UIN Sultan Maulana Hasanudin (SMH) campus in Banten at 3pm WIB. However, the atmosphere began to turn unfavorable and finally the clashes began to break out around 7:00 p.m. WIB and ended around 11:00 p.m. WIB.

The clash came after police tried to disperse the demonstration and the crowd entered the UIN SMH Banten campus. From inside the campus, several mobs were seen spraying water, throwing rocks and wood at police, TNI and media crews covering them.

The police repeatedly fired tear gas and sprayed water at the students inside the UIN SMH Banten campus. Meanwhile, the student camp responded by throwing stones and wood at the police line.

Several people were injured as a result of the confrontation, both from the police and the students. The student crowd ran backwards. The authorities seized and examined at least five students.

The Banten Regional Police also requested assistance from the Vice Chancellor of UIN SMH Banten, Ilzamudin Ma’mur. However, that didn’t stop the action. A dialogue was held between the students and the police.

The Banten Regional Police said that the student action had been infiltrated by an irresponsible group, causing chaos.

In Bekasi, thousands of workers carried out a similar action that was divided into several places. The head of PPMI SPSI (all Indonesian workers unions) Bekasi City and Regency Heri Sopyan said that the workers had been disbanded since 5.30 pm WIB.

In response to the labor action, 1,117 members of the TNI-Polri joint staff were prepared to secure a national labor strike against the Omnibus Law on Cipta Kerja in the Bekasi area. Dandim 0509 Bekasi Regency Letkol Kav. Anggoro said the number consisted of 837 Polri employees and 280 TNI employees.

Still on the same day, hundreds of workers held a demonstration in front of the East Java provincial DPRD building. The head of the Surabaya Confederation of Workers’ Unions, Dendy Prayitno, said the demonstration would continue until October 8. The aspirations expressed remained the same, that is, to reject the Omnibus Law on job creation.

Meanwhile, in the capital DKI, Jakarta, mass demonstrations have yet to take place. However, Polda Metro Jaya arrested 17 high school / equivalent students who were caught gathering around the DPR / MPR building in Jalan Gatot Subroto, Jakarta on Tuesday (10/6). They will be questioned by the police.

The day before, several workers arrived at the DPR / MPR building. One of the mass representatives then argued with members of the police who asked them to disperse and leave.

Then, in response to a possible demonstration in the capital, 9,236 members of the joint staff were alerted to guard various locations in anticipation of demonstrations against the Cipta Kerja Omnibus Law bill.

Jakarta’s absence from large demonstrations cannot be separated from police efforts to block or block the masses of workers who want to protest in the capital from their home areas.

The Head of the Department of Communication and Media of the Indonesian Workers’ Trade Unions Confederation (KSPI) Kahar S Cahyono revealed that the blocking action took place in Bekasi, West Java and Tangerang, Banten.

The head of the Bekasi Federation of Indonesian Metal Workers’ Unions (FSPMI), Amir Mahfudz, said that the security forces intercepted the command car that his party planned to hold a demonstration in front of the DPR building.

The National Police itself used the Telegram Letter from the Chief of Police on crowd prevention in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic as the basis for blocking these demonstrations.

Even so, the Indonesian Student Executive Bodies Alliance (BEM SI) and various labor elements in various regions still plan to take to the streets on October 8. Furthermore, the national strike was still in the hands of the blue workers.
